Since 2005 the Helena Ultra Running League (HURL) has organized the HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs. As trail and ultra running events are becoming more popular the HURL group is working to continue to provide a safe and competitive event. We need community involvement to keep this a top notch, safe, and fun event.
The HURL race committee and board of directors worked on documenting the volunteer needs for the Elkhorn events. The following document provides a race organizational chart along with brief position descriptions for lead volunteers. The goal is to make sure that we have good coordination and communication to ensure that the event continues to be successful.
We are asking people to commit to helping out by filling these positions. We are planning a volunteer meeting for the 2nd week of December (after hunting season and before the holiday crazy) to start working toward a great 2020 event. If you’d like to commit to helping out and want to see the HURL events continue and expand, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, email address and volunteer position of interest by November 15, 2019. Once we have the list, we’ll send a meeting notice with time and place.
At our January 18, 2018 meeting, the HURL Board of Directors approved a group activity policy for when we run trails other than those shown on PPLT’s South Hills Trail Map. Our group runs can take us to remote and wild locations, and the policy outlines what you should expect from organizers of these adventure runs, and what organizers expect from you. We welcome anyone who wants to join us in experiencing Montana’s backcountry, but you’ll need to sign the policy first.
Also at our January 18, 2018 meeting the HURL Board of Directors approved HURL’s Donation Policy and Donation Form. Part of HURL’s mission is “To provide resources, funding, and leadership towards their primary mission of enjoying, maintaining, improving, and developing the trail systems in the Helena, Montana area”. The Donation Policy outlines how the BOD evaluates donation requests and the Donation Form can be used to request consideration of a donation by HURL.
The Helena Ultra Runners League (HURL) is a loose collection of Helena area ultra and trail running enthusiasts. We don’t have a membership roster, we don’t have officers, we don’t take attendance, we don’t have egos. We encourage each other, but leave it up to each individual to determine their own goals, limits, and reasons for running. We want running to be enjoyable, not a chore. That’s why, when given the choice, HULRers generally opt for trail rather than road.
More than anything, HURL is an attitude.
Official HURL group runs take place on as follows:
- Wednesdays at 5:45 pm from the Lewis and Clark Library, year round. Generally 4-5 miles. We run trails when we have daylight and the trails are mostly free of ice, snow, and mud. During winter months we run roads. These runs are in the dark so reflective gear, and flashlights/headlamps are recommended. Traction devices may be helpful depending on surface conditions.
- Saturday mornings from the Bagel Company on Last Chance Gulch. 9:00 am from November 1 thru end of February, 8:00 am from March 1 through end of October. These runs can be up to 20+ miles with options to go shorter. We run trails when they are mostly free of ice, snow, and mud. During winter months we run roads, but still try to avoid pavement as much as possible. To mix things up during the year, we have occasional Saturday run options from other locations near Helena.
