Statement regarding the Coronavirus/COVID-19 Pandemic from the Helena Ultra Runners League

In light of continued actions by federal, state, and local governments throughout the nation advising citizens and businesses to limit their activities in order to slow the spread of the Coronavirus and the COVID-19 disease, HURL has taken several actions that impacted our events in 2020. Currently, we are tentatively planning the following 2021 events.

  1. Fat Ass Run. Due to the continued pandemic the 2021, Fat Ass is going virtual.  Runners have a full month of January 2021 to complete his disorganized event. Fat Ass events are in the grand tradition of ultras being relaxed, low key, loosely organized, adventure runs rather than high pressure, competitive races. In this tradition, there will be no entry fees, no support, and no formal timing. The course will be the same as last year starting at the Old Shooting Range trailhead with your choice of trails or roads. See: https://hurlelkhorn.com/hurl-fat-ass-run/ for more details.
  2. Moonlight on Mount Ascension https://hurlelkhorn.com/moonlight-on-mt-ascension/ – Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, HURL was successful in providing the MOMA event in 2020. We are planning for a race start of June 18 at 8:00 pm at the Old Shooting Range trailhead. Registration is now open!
  3. Elkhorn Endurance Events https://hurlelkhorn.com/ – The logistics of safely providing aid stations and a quality event in the wilderness of the Elkhorn Mountains (as well as permit issues with local health officials) caused us to cancel the 2020 Elkhorn races. We are planning to return to the mountains in 2021. The date for the 2021 events will be August 7th.  Registration is open!

We continue to closely monitor the evolving nature of the pandemic, and will continue to follow recommendations on prevention and spread of the virus by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), State (MT DPHHS), and Local Health Departments (L&C Health).  Any changes affecting plans for our 2021 events will be posted on our website and announce via social media.

The HURL group hopes you are able to get out on the trails to enjoy our beautiful fall weather.  We encourage you to continue to be vigilant in staying safe and keeping your fellow runners safe. Wear your mask in public, social distance, and most importantly try to get out and enjoy.

Happy Running!

Elkhorn Logo

Held annually on the first Saturday in August in the remote, rugged, and wild Elkhorn Mountains near Helena, Montana in Jefferson County.

All three distances feature spectacular Montana scenery, breathtaking climbs, technical descents, miles of challenging single track trail, primitive roads, dirt, rocks, forests, meadows, and cold, clear creeks to splash through. Not one step on pavement.

We are just off Interstate 15 – 6.5 hours from Salt Lake City, 6.5 hours from Calgary, 4.5 hours from Spokane, 7.5 hours from Boise, and 3.5 hours from Billings. Helena is centrally located between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks – 3-1/2 hours from the Saint Mary Visitor Center at Glacier National Park and 3 hours from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park at West Yellowstone.

Take a run on the wild side, join us in Montana for a run you won’t soon forget.

The HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs are a 100% volunteer effort, from aid station volunteers up to the race director.  We put on this event to show off the incredible trails we have in our backyard.  All left over entry fees are donated to local non-profit organizations, or organizations that help us with our event. In 2018 we donated to Prickly Pear Land Trust, Capital City Amateur Radio Club, Elkhorn Search and Rescue, Capital Trail Vehicle Association, and the Montana City Volunteer Fire Department.

In co-operation with the Helena National Forest

  1. Is there a wait list for the 50 mile. In case a spot opens up?
I’m running beaverhead 100k and just learned about the “ultimate challenge”

    • Manuel,

Yes there is a waitlist. There are around 20 on it now. I think you would likely get in if you get on the waitlist. You can get on the waitlist through ultrasignup.com.
